Speaker meeting 16th February 2015

Stella Scott and Linda Brown from Erewash CVS Voluntary Action were the speakers at the Church Wilne Rotary meeting at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook on Monday 16th March.

Stella, who is the Chief Officer at CVS, gave an informative background to the centre which is based at the Granville Centre in Long Eaton.  The members heard about funding and the setting up of other groups of which there are now over 250 in Erewash. They also act as the voice for the volunteer sector and sit on many strategic panels.

CVS actively supports both new and existing community and voluntary groups providing information on setting up and running groups, advice on keeping accounts, constitutions, charity registration and publicity.

They have recently acquired funding for a two year full time clinical position.

Linda, who has been with CVS for almost 30 years, spoke about the volunteer side and during her time has seen them housed in Long Eaton, Ilkeston, the Long Eaton Town Hall and now the Granville Centre.   These premises were purchased from Derbyshire County Council and have been renovated over the past few years.

They befriend and visit around 100 people a week in the area who are lonely, isolated or housebound calling in for a chat and a cuppa which goes a long way.

A shopping service for people who are unable to shop for themselves and have no family or friends to help and these referrals are from Social Services.

Transport is provided for people who are unable to access public transport and the volunteer drivers use their own vehicle and more are always needed.

Strong links exist with many local groups including Treetops and CVS advocate good practice throughout the sector.

The club's vote of thanks was given by John Astell who thanked Stella and Linda for a very informative and beneficial service and said "What would the country do without volunteers?"
