Speaker meeting 30th March 2015

The members of the Rotary Club of Church Wilne welcomed Past District Governor Rotarian Gordon McGlone to its speaker evening at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook on Monday 30th March.

Gordon gave the members a factual and pictorial presentation on Sand Dams and in particular in the Makuenu County in Kenya which is about the total area of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Currently 1.2 million children die every year worldwide due to the lack of water and sanitation and Rotary has been doing something about this with our Aqua Box and Water Aid projects. Another solution is Sand Dams which District has been involved with over the past 3 years.

In Africa the rain season is normally 2 weeks twice a year and Gordon explained how through Sand Dams this can harvested as under normal conditions the water drains or evaporates within a week.  The Dam collects the water within the thick layer of sand which then holds the water which is safe for drinking later. Without clean water ladies and children have to walk long distances every day to collect it just to survive.

Sand Dams are not new and have been built successfully throughout the world and were created by the Romans.  It works by building a reinforced concrete wall over the riverbed and the bedrock needs to be good.  The costs are mainly in the survey, preparation and equipment.  The building of the Dams is mainly completed by the local community and they last a lifetime.

Gordon said they are also taught about agriculture and how to grow their own crops for their community and neighbours.

To date 22 clubs in our District 1220 have contributed £16,000 and with the addition of matching Rotary grants and £48k from the Department for International Development this amounted to £80k

Gordon thanked the members for their interest and support and wished member Adrian Perkins a successful trip to the area later this year.

In summary he said "To transform life – just add water"

The club's vote of thanks was given by Adrian Perkins.
