Speaker Meeting 6th June 2016
Dr Bob Winter - Cheif Medical Officer at Donington Park

Dr Bob Winter, Chief Medical Officer at Donington Park Motor Racing Circuit

The Rotary Club of Church Wilne welcomed Dr Bob Winter to the recent speaker evening. He gave a fascinating talk on his work as FIM Chief Medical Officer for Donington Park Motor Racing Circuit. He described the great care and resources spent on protecting the rider's health should there be an incident on the track. Typically, for the top motor bike races there would be 22 doctors, 15 paramedics, and 10 ambulances stationed around the track, ensuring medical assistance can be supplied in less than 90 seconds anywhere along the length of the 4 kilometre track.

The Donington Park Motor Racing Circuit

The reason Bob and his team may be required

The club was shown video clips of the types of accidents which can occur on the track. It was a stark reminder of the debt we owe these medical professionals. This became even more relevant to our club when the Rotarian giving the vote of thanks told Bob that he was forever grateful to the team for attending to his nephew who had an accident during a motorcycle race and almost lost a leg but thankfully he was cared for at the track side and has now recovered.

The nurses operate within a 25 mile radius and in Derbyshire they currently have 32 nurses and Nottinghamshire 34.Bob has been appointed Medical Director for East Midlands Ambulance Service, which is one of the charities supported by Church Wilne Rotary Club, for more information on air ambulance please look on their website: www.ambucopter.org.uk
