Speaker Meeting 25th July 2016
Dr Paul Denny - The Ship's Doctor

Paul Denny, President Elect Adrian and Barry Austin

On Monday 25th July the members of the Rotary Club of Church Wilne welcomed Dr Paul Denny to its speaker meeting at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook.

Dr Denny, who is well known to many having retired just 2 years ago from the Long Eaton Health Centre, spoke about in 1996 when reading a medical magazine he saw an advert requesting for GPs to apply to be a Ship's Doctor. He applied and a few days later he received a telephone call asking if he could join the Fred Olsen ship the Black Prince the following Monday. Having received permission from his colleagues he boarded the ship at Dover on departure day.

Paul said all cruise ships are hotels and the Black Prince having just 600 patients as against 2,000 in the health practice was not too challenging.

The members were given a slide show which included details of the medical centre and its equipment which was pretty basic, the side wards with just 2 beds, and the pharmacy.

His first duty on the departure of the ship was to attend the Captain's cocktail party when he was introduced to the ship's engineer and having shown an interest in his work was immediately given a tour of the engine room.

Paul gave an insight into some of the medical challenges encountered on the voyage plus the fire and life boat drills, the ships entertainment and his favourite early morning swim at the "Blunt End".

The members were given several tips following his on board experiences; some related to health, travel insurance and using the web to find more about the various destinations.

Sadly Paul's days as a Ship's Doctor are no more but it was a wonderful experience on that and other voyages with the Fred Olsen Cruise Line.

The Club's vote of thanks was given by Barry Austin, who having known Paul for a long time, said it had been an informative and very enjoyable talk.
