John Barrett - Whisky as an Investment

The members of the Rotary Club of Church Wilne welcomed District 1220 Governor Colin Gell on Monday evening 19th September to their regular meeting place at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook.

Also on the night Church Wilne member John Barrett gave the members a whisky tasting opportunity along with the history of the product.

DG Colin's talk included the "Four Way Test" which is – Is it the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it bring goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

This year it the centenary of Rotary's own charity the Rotary Foundation which has had many successes including a wide variety of water projects, Sand Dams, educational, medical and many more.

Colin spoke about Rotary's Polio eradication which commenced in 1985 and there has been just 26 cases world wide this year and it is hoped that by the end of the year we will have seen the last cases of Polio.

Membership was also highlighted and Colin spoke about the opportunities that now exist with Satellite Clubs being formed in other districts.

Colin concluded by quoting the Rotary International President's thoughts which was "Work hard, have fun, good balance which means good Rotary and we can build a stronger future this year".

The members then had a presentation by John Barrett on whisky and during the evening, those wishing enjoyed some whisky tasting.

John spoke about the history of the product going back to the 1300s, including the Irish and Scottish early manufacturing processes.

In manufacture the members heard in detail how the single malt is manufactured and they tasted a 12 year old plus Bruichladdich which was 50% proof and for some was enjoyable and others not to their taste.

Following the talks Rotarian Geoff Brown thanked both District Governor Colin for a most informative talk and said we had all learned much from John about Whisky.
