The Rotary Club of Church Wilne then welcomed Rotarian Andy Cartwright to its speaker evening.

He gave a fascinating talk into the fight against Polio. There are now only 11 cases in the world. We are so close to eradicating the disease. Tuesday 24th October is world Polio Day, established by Rotary International over a decade ago to commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk who led the first team to develop the vaccine.

The worldwide vaccination program championed by Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99.99%. Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease. Famous polio survivors include Donald Sutherland, Alan Alda, Francis Ford Coppola, Lord Snowdon and Mary Berry.

Showing in local cinemas from Friday is the film "Breathe". It is an inspiring film about the life of Robin Cavendish, who became paralyzed from the neck down by polio at 28, given only 3 months to live, he became the longest living polio survivor in Great Britain. He and his devoted wife, Diana Blacker, travelled the world with hopes of transforming the lives of other like him. Well worth going to see.

Colour on WORLD POLIO DAY, Tuesday 24th October - Buildings in our area have been coloured Purple to commemorate the day.
