Speaker Meeting 26th March 2018

Nick Jackson - Tools with a Mission

We welcomed Rotarian Nick Jackson for the Long Eaton Dawnbreakers Rotary club who spoke about "TWAM" which stands for Tools with a Mission. Nick is part of the District 1220 International team and he explained they collect tools which are refurbished and then delivered in containers to Africa.

It is Long Eaton Dawnbreakers International project of the year and they have so far delivered over 5 tonnes. They have publicized the project on Radio Derby and through their local press contacts.

The club currently stores the tools locally until they have enough to be collected and they are then delivered to be refurbished in Coventry.

Whilst this is not a recognised Rotary project, it has been taken on by many clubs throughout the UK and each year over 30 containers have been delivered to Africa.

The sort of tools required includes builders, carpenters, electricians, gardeners, plumbers, motor mechanics and many more. It also includes larger items such as generators, compressors and industrial sewing machines.

The club's vote of thanks was given by Mick Barker who said the first he knew about the project was when he heard Nick speaking on Radio Derby and he thanked Nick for a most informative and entertaining talk.
