There are more than 2 million people in the UK living with sight loss which is severe enough to have a significant impact on their lives. 250 people start to lose their eyesight every day. Over half of these cases are preventable. Lynda emphasised the importance of having an eye test at the Opticians every 2 years.

Sight Support Derbyshire run a number of community-based services for blind and visually impaired adults and children throughout the County. One of which is providing Eye Clinic Liaison Officers in the eye clinics at Royal Derby Hospital and Chesterfield Royal Hospital. This service supports over 140 people per month.

Lynda stated that as a charity they have to raise two thirds of their running costs themselves. She highlighted their Annual Duck Race. Every year in June around a 100 giant plastic ducks, sponsored by local companies, individuals and organisations, are entered into the Best Dressed Duck Competition before joining 3,500 little plastic ducks to race down the River Derwent. The Watersafe team ensure that at the end of the race the ducks are retrieved and returned to their sponsors.

Rammie helps to load the ducks for the race.

An upcoming fundraiser features Derbyshire firefighter Andy Quinn. Andy shot to fame as a singer on Michael McIntyre's Big Show and will be performing on 24th November at the Broadway Baptist Church in Derby, raising money for the charity. Tickets are £8.
