Pat Bevan - Polio Update

  24th October 2018
World Polio Day Events

Rotarian Pat Bevan gave a brief update on Polio at the speaker meeting on 22nd October.

Over the years the Polio vaccination program has had our total support. The final drive under the End Polio Now appeal is very near to ridding the world of this crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease.
The worldwide vaccination program, championed by Rotary, has reduced polio cases by 99.99%. In 1988 there were 198 Polio endemic countries. There are now only 3 countries and only 20 cases in the world.

A Night for Polio

The Duchess Theatre dressed in Purple for the evening.

On 24th October the Duchess Theatre in Long Eaton was illuminated purple to raise awareness of World Polio Day and promote the Rotary 'End Polio Now' campaign. Rotary International is giving a final push to eradicate polio throughout the world.

Fundraising and awareness events took place throughout the UK and internationally to raise vital funds.

In Castle Donington, members and friends of Church Wilne Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs enjoyed an excellent Charity Curry Night at the Rose of Bengal.

This event raised £439.70 including a generous donation by the Restaurant's management. The Bill and Melinda Gates foundation will double match our fund-raising efforts to make a total contribution of £1,320 for End Polio Now. This means vaccinations for over 13,000 children.

All from a Curry and Raffle!

Church Wilne Rotary Club is attracting new members through various initiatives, associate membership, satellite clubs and Friends of Rotary, where people can assist with running some of our events. Volunteering helps to get a taste of what it would be like to join the club
