Ken Bird - On the Rocks

You could say that Rotarian Ken Bird is a bit of a social climber. His recent illustrated presentation to the Rotary Club of Church Wilne on the subject of his passion for climbing demonstrated this perfectly.

His love of the wilder parts of our planet inspired him to seek the rarefied atmosphere of mountain peaks. Ken has climbed the Central Arete, Glyder Fawr, in Wales. UK Climbing describe this as, "a grand Welsh day out".

However, his desire to gain greater height led him further afield. To the Dolomite range for example, where he and his friends ascended Tomaselli, amongst other peaks.
Described by UK Climbing "dramatic and the views from the summit are superb, particularly on clear days when climbers on the nearby Giovanni Lipella can easily be seen. The summit of Tomaselli remains one of Ken's favourite via ferrata or iron road climbs (fixed rope).

Practice, preparation and perseverance are key to a successful ascent so Ken and friends practise their skills and techniques at the Nottingham Climbing Centre. It is here that their climbs are meticulously planned to minimise risks to themselves and others.

Church Wilne Rotary Club is attracting new members through various initiatives, associate membership, satellite clubs and Friends of Rotary, where people can assist with running some of our events. Volunteering helps to get a taste of what it would be like to join the club
