Speaker Meeting 4th February 2019

Peter Watson - A Different Way of Building

Peter Watson of Ilke Homes was a guest speaker at our recent Rotary Club of Church Wilne meeting. The Company, based in Doncaster, specialises in the production of energy efficient, environmentally friendly modular homes. Their production factory in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire opened in May 2018 and they aim to be building 2,000 homes per annum within the next 2 years with plans to scale up to 5,000 within 5 years. It presently has a workforce of 220 people but a potential capacity to employ 800 people.

The modular homes are constructed of a lightweight steel frame and being well insulated are highly efficient. They typically cost 20% less to heat than traditionally built brand-new properties and half the cost to heat of an average UK home. Peter explained that their modular homes are acceptable for mortgage purposes, have the usual 10-year NHBC warranty and are insurable. Aesthetically, the company is able to produce different sized properties, varying styles and finishes and accommodate client's individual specifications. The homes are constructed in sections at the company's factory and then assembled on site. This has a key advantage in reducing on-site construction time, inconvenience and other adverse environmental factors encountered in all residential building developments.

Peter said, "There is a considerable demand for more housing, especially in the public sector, where nearly all Local Authority housing stock has been handed over to housing associations." A large percentage of the houses built by the company is affordable housing for housing associations who then rent them. The company is clearly helping to meet a demand for affordable housing.
