Speaker Meeting 18th March 2019

Joshua Johns
Wheelchair Tennis

Recent guest speakers at the Rotary Club of Church Wilne were Joshua Johns, aged 13, and his father Steven, both from Borrowash. They gave a fascinating presentation on wheelchair tennis. Despite living with cerebral palsy from birth Joshua has shown an immense interest in sports and participated in both football and judo from a very early age.

In recent years Joshua has achieved considerable success in wheelchair tennis at both local and national level. To help Joshua achieve his ambitions the Rotary Club of Church Wilne sponsored him this year and last with £250. This is part of our clubs commitment to support local people. He trains at both the Nottingham and Loughborough Tennis Centres. Working with a national coach to progress his game. Joshua explained that his ultimate ambition is to be part of the Wheelchair Tennis Paralympic Team.

It is clear that while Joshua dedicates a lot if his time to wheelchair tennis he manages to fit this in around his daily school life. Although he only started wheelchair tennis at the age of 12 he has already achieved success by representing England at the National School Games, winning several medals. With his dedication to the sport he clearly has a future at international level.

Church Wilne Rotary Club is attracting new members through various initiatives, associate membership, satellite clubs and Friends of Rotary, where people can assist with running some of our events. Volunteering helps to get a taste of what it would be like to join the club
