Speaker Meeting 20th May 2019

Alexa Wingfield

The Rotary Club of Church Wilne welcomed to their recent speaker meeting, Alexa Wigfield of the charity When You Wish Upon A Star. Their simple mission is to grant wishes to children aged between 2 and 16 who are living with a life-threatening illness.

Barbara White OBE started the charity in 1990, after meeting Johanna a very sick four-year-old. She started fundraising to send the family to Florida so Johanna could meet all her favourite characters. Unfortunately, before the wish had been granted Johanna's health deteriorated and sadly she died. However, since then over 17,500 wishes have been granted.

Wishes can range from being a fairy princess; a soldier for a day; meeting celebrities; swimming with dolphins, or a trip to Lapland to meet Santa. Alexa explained that last year, the charity increased their support to allow the whole family to share in the wish. A quote from one of the sick children brought tears to the eyes, "I'm a little old for this wish, but I want to make memories for my little sister." What a wonderful charity.

To support their excellent work, the Club made a donation at the end of the evening.

Church Wilne Rotary Club is attracting new members through various initiatives, associate membership, satellite clubs and Friends of Rotary, where people can assist with running some of our events. Volunteering helps to get a taste of what it would be like to join the club
