Speaker Meeting 30th September 2019

David Hood - District Governor

The Rotary Club of Church Wilne welcomed District Governor David Hood to its recent speaker evening, which was also attended by members of the Ilkeston Rotary Club. David is the Governor of 66 Rotary Clubs in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and some clubs in Leicestershire, Staffordshire and South Yorkshire (including Sheffield). There are over 1,800 active Rotary members in these 66 Clubs and the Church Wilne Club, with 48 active members, is the fifth largest Club.

This year's Rotary theme is "Rotary Connects the World". David's Club Wirksworth is the home of "Aquabox", which provides clean drinking water to disaster areas including the Bahamas, recently struck by Hurricane Dorian. https://www.rotarygbi.org/bahamas-hurricane-dorian-update/

David's career as an Export Manager took him abroad, often to dangerous parts of the world, including a civil war in Cameroon and earthquakes in Jamaica and Turkey. It was during his travels that he learnt to appreciate how by working together we could achieve great things. He has visited many Rotary Clubs around the world and witnessed the remarkable work they have carried out, spending the funds they have raised in their local communities

As a scout leader, youth leader, member of Round Table and later Rotary, David has worked tirelessly on many projects supporting disabled and vulnerable youngsters helping them to enjoy outdoor pursuits such as canoeing, walking and climbing, similar to those enjoyed by Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) participants.

One of this year's priorities is to continue encouraging younger people to join Rotary and organising events which appeal to them. Rotary sponsors "Music in the Garden" in July and has helped to raise £500,000 over 15 years for local charities and Rotary Foundation http://district.rotary1220.org/music-in-the-gardens-2019-5th-7th-july.

DG David presents President Chris with the Rotary Year theme banner.

The Church Wilne Rotary Club is keen to attract new members through various initiatives, associate membership, satellite clubs and Friends of Rotary, where people can help in the running of some of our events to get a taste of what it would be like to join our club.
