4th November 2019

Joint President Andy Cartwright welcomed the 39 members and 36 invited guests to the Club's Special Presentation Evening for 2019.

He explained that this had a different format this year. Previously it related only to the annual Charity Horse Ride but this evening the Club was celebrating 4 very successful charity events held earlier in the year which had raised a total in excess of £17,300. A sponsored ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro ( 19,340 ft/5895 m ) by himself and by Inner Wheel Joint President Andrea Tew, who was welcomed by Andy as a guest; the 13th Annual Charity Horse Ride; the Open Day at the Cat and Fiddle Windmill; and the exit collection at the Derbyshire County Show.

Many of the guests related to the Charity Horse Ride which had raised a total of over £76,000 since 2006. These were the landowners, farmers, business sponsors and helpers who have made such a vital contribution over the past years. Andy gave particular thanks to the landowners and farmers who allow us the use of their land for the Horse Ride.

The Club's weekly meetings have been at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook for around 20 years and Andy gave particular thanks to guests Sally and Miriam for keeping the Club members fed and watered during those years. The Royal Oak, as well as being a sponsor for the Horse Ride, has become a very important part of our Rotary Club.

This was the Club's first year in supporting the Cat and Fiddle Windmill Open Day, where Di Hunter and Mel Richardson kindly invited us to support this event. Andy welcomed Di Hunter and 6 other guests including representatives of Di's selected charity Broxtowe Day Care Centre.

The other guests were representatives of the 3 charities Treetops Hospice Care, Derby Mountain Rescue and Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

One of the incentives given for the Horse Ride this year was to invite the riders to obtain sponsorship and to offer incentives to riders who obtained sponsorship of over £45 in total.
The names of these riders were entered in a draw which was made by John Bown and Keith Murfin, from Air Ambulance. The lucky winners of the £100 Risley Saddlery voucher and the Morley Hayes Meal Voucher were announced by Joint President Andy.
