District 1220 Conference 2015 - Southport

District Conference 2015

Rotarians, wives and partners all dressed up

This year's District 1220 Rotary conference was held at Southport from 2nd to 4th October and the Church Wilne Rotary members along with partners were well represented.

President Tony Beenham gave the club an update at their business meeting on Monday 8th October and said he had prepared a presentation for the conference which gave details of some of their recent successes including the charity horse ride, sand dams, bike ride from Denmark to Paris and the forthcoming Christmas Santa float.

They stayed at the Clifton Villa Hotel very close to the conference centre and following a group meal on the Friday evening they enjoyed great entertainment by the Travelling Wilburys.

Gary Dundas gave an overview on the Saturday business meetings which was hosted by District Governor Roger Summers. Several brief presentations were made to a packed audience throughout the morning some related to Rotary and the support given the various charities and later in the session there were 3 motivational talks.
During the afternoon there were several breakout groups for those wishing to learn more about specific subjects.
During the evening the entertainment was in the Floral Hall and "That'll Be The Day" musical stage act gave 2 hours entertainment from the sixties and seventies.

Adrian Perkins reported on the morning session started with presentation of awards.

Our President Tony collected the award for winning the ten pin bowling competition.

Moving on to the speakers - Claire Rowcliffe from the Royal British Legion informed us of all the amazing things their organization does besides selling poppies.
Steve Haseldine of Derby Mercia Rotary club – talked about the Raspberry PI computer project
The next speaker did a presentation about The Titan Project which was set up in Duffield to raise funds to give disadvantaged children in the derby area opportunities they wouldn't get. Something similar to 'CHICKS'

We then had the 'thought for the day' taken by Geoff Blunton of the Salvation Army with payers by our very own Reverend Gary

We finished the conference with Jasvinder Sanghera who spoke about the Charity Karma Nirvana which supports victims of forced marriage and honour based violence.
This was a really emotional talk with several references to her own experiences and actual cases that speared her on to set up the charity and carry on championing the cause.
