Kewal congratulated Geoff on just becoming the Church
Wilne Rotary President for the next year and said his
talk would be about his family, charities and his
Mayoral duties.
He arrived in the UK in August 1961 and lived in
Yorkshire until moving into this area in 1973. He has
been married to Lakhbir for over 40 years and they have
a daughter and son who were both educated at the
Wilsthorpe School.
They are proud grandparents to 3 girls and a boy.
Kewal spoke about his career which has been mainly in
two industries, the motor trade and textiles. Currently
his own business in Long Eaton is based on importing,
wholesaling and exporting ladies' fashion accessories to
the independent retailers and wholesalers.
Over the years Kewal has carried out charity work both
here and in India, having raised funding to organise
medical clinics in India for the poor to get treatment
for various ailments including funding some 500 cataract
operations.
The mayor's role includes chair of the Borough Council,
representing the council and the community at outside
engagements, presiding at or hosting civic functions
organised by the Council. Also helping to raise money
for charities.
Kewal said he was proud to be given the opportunity to
serve Erewash Borough and work with many organisations
like Rotary to make a difference.
The Club's vote of thanks was given by Barry Austin who
said he had first met Kewal over 20 years ago and he had
always been a good friend and caring neighbour. We all
wish you well for your year as our Mayor.
