Speaker Meeting 1st June 2020

Andy Lord
Birmingham to Burma in 1946

With the government lockdown in place the Church Wilne Rotary continues to hold its Monday evening meetings using Zoom, 35 Rotarians attended.

This week's speaker was President Elect Andy, he gave a fascinating talk on his father-in-law's trip from the UK to Myohoung in Burma, at the end of the war.

He was a Corporal of a 14 man RAF aeroplane maintenance team and at the age of 18, he and his team undertook the 38 day journey. Flew from the UK to Hanover, then to Brindizi in Italy landing eventually in Malta. A ship through the Suez canal (sleeping in Standee bunks, canvas strung between tubular steel, six high and 18 inch apart, pure luxury) and onto India for a 17 day, 2,000km train journey. An epic journey. During which the team had to guard the train, in their "Physical Training" kit. A very hot and challenging trip, with no air con.

The talk was supplemented with a number of photographs and maps of the epic trip.

The Strathnaver, the ship for some of the journey.

From Malta in top left to Burma (now Myanmar) far right.

The Standee Bunks - not much room on a long journey.

The usual passtime for the Physical Training Kit!

The epic railway journey!
