Church Wilne Rotary Satellite group together with the main Rotary Club & Church Wilne Inner Wheel recently donated £180 to the charity Toilet Twinning. The money will go towards building latrines in Africa.

Chair of the Satellite Adrian Perkins presented each group with a certificate acknowledging their contribution, the certificates will be located at the Royal Oak in Ockbrook (where the groups hold their meetings).

As part of the project, Frank Franklin a volunteer with Toilet Twinning was invited to a Rotary Zoom meeting to do a presentation about the work the charity does.

Frank informed the meeting that Diarrhoea is the 3^rd biggest killer of children under the age of 5 in the Sub-Saharan Africa. He went on to say Toilet Twinning help set up small village committees to look at the link between open defecation and ill health. For many, this is a revelation: they have never understood why their children fall ill with sickness and diarrhoea in the rainy season. Then, they are keen to have a latrine to help change their lives for the better.

But before latrine-building starts, there's hygiene education on practices such as handwashing. This is key to behaviour change in the long term. People generally build their own latrine, and this means they are much more likely to continue to use it and maintain it, ensuring the project is sustainable.
