The Church Wilne Rotary welcomed Greg Maskalick (Past Club President) to it's recent speaker meeting, in which he took us through his adventure when, with his friend Iain, they cycled the length of Hadrian's Wall for fun and to build fitness.

Three stages: Whitehaven to Carlisle 65 miles, a gentle ride along the beautiful coast line, 32 degrees centigrade with a mild breeze and flat. The second stage Carlisle to Haydon Bridge, 42 miles, inland, still 32C but no breeze and incredible long steep inclines, utterly exhausting. But great views, wonderful pubs and kind locals in the pubs. Only stopped at, of course, for refreshment breaks. The final stage, another 41 miles Haydon Bridge to Tynemouth, same conditions but the home stretch, built some friendships with a group of fellow cyclers from London, one of who did the challenge in sandals??

The tradition of dipping the rear wheel in both oceans was observed. Although only 10% of the wall is still intact it is an impressive sight. Marking the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, 73 miles long and built by 15,000 men. The English heritage website is very good for those wanting more information on a wonderful place to visit:
