Papplewick Pumping Station

Seventeen Rotarians went to the Fox and Hounds in Blidworth and enjoyed a hearty pub lunch. We had good fun and fellowship which is part of the hallmark of Church Wilne Rotary. We then travelled a short distance to the grounds of the Pumping Station in Ravenshead where we were joined by three other members for the tour.

Our volunteer guides were John and Mick who transported us up a narrow country lane to the underground reservoir in a trailer pulled behind a vintage tractor which in itself was quite an interesting experience. The reservoir, deep underground, is a huge, cavernous space built entirely of red brick and stone with an intricate domed ceilings almost resembling the interior of a cathedral. All of this amazing Victorian construction was completed in a matter of months and simply designed to hold millions of gallons of water. The extensive views over Nottingham from the top of the reservoir were simply breathtakingly beautiful.

Back down the hill on our tractor ride, we arrived at the Engine House where there is an attractive ornamental Cooling Pond just outside and our guides explained its purpose and also fed the fish at the same time. The Engine House resembles a gothic church with its elaborately decorated columns, polished mahogany and brass work together with stained glass windows. The original twin beam engines, built by James Watt & Co. in 1884, are housed here and they are of particular interest because of their outstanding Victorian engineering and design. The engines are powered by six Lancashire boilers housed in a Boiler House consuming considerable amounts of high quality coal!
