Speaker Meeting 24th August 2020 |
|
At the Zoom meeting attended by 32 members, we were treated to a fascinating and informative talk from Christopher Peskett who is a Nurse and has been with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) for many years. MSF is a Charity almost entirely funded by public donations which keeps it free of political pressure and giving access to areas similar organisations cannot reach. MSF was founded in 1970 to help cope with the Biafran conflict and last year they worked in 70 countries providing medical care and support to people in distress. In 1999 they were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their unique approach to protecting and speaking out for persecuted people as well as providing Medical Assistance. Christopher has worked in Myanmar (Burma), Sudan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Zambia as well as many other countries, supporting local Nationals by creating teams and clinics to provide Medical intervention and Vaccination for many diseases including Malaria, Meningitis, Cholera, as well as providing Mosquito Nets, Bedding and Fresh Water Bore Holes etc. A vote of thanks was given by Rotarian John Cook who spoke of the amazing work and revelations that Christopher's wonderful talk had provided. |
