On the 26^th April 2021, The Rotary Club of Church Wilne were treated to an informative presentation by George Bird of the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust. George gave a fascinating presentation of the Trust's development of the Nature Reserve at Willington in Derbyshire and particularly the proposed introduction of Beavers into the Reserve.

George informed the members that the Reserve comprised forty-seven hectares made up of wetland, grassland, woodlands and reed beds. Eight hectares of reed beds is home to a variety of animals, insects and birds including elusive Bitterns. The wetlands sustain a variety of animals and flowers and holds water which is released slowly into the River Trent. It is home to herons, dragonflies, kingfishers and otters. The wetlands are supported by woodlands which are both wet woodlands and plantation woodlands which support a variety of birds and animals such as foxes and badgers.

George emphasised the importance of land management and the environment and accordingly The Trust endeavours to replicate and promote the natural habitat and follow the natural world. The many volunteers work extremely hard to mimic natural development where this is possible.

The next project to be undertaken at The Reserve is the introduction of Beavers later in the year. It is anticipated that the Beavers will help to manage the wetlands and restore much of its natural features. They are seen as 'eco-engineers' and will benefit other species and promote new plants and vegetation through the silt and sediment created by the dams built by the Beavers.

In conclusion, George said The Reserve is an important environmental tool against global warming as it holds vast amounts of carbon which would normally escape into the atmosphere.

It was extremely interesting to hear of the very important work undertaken by The Trust and its vital work that impacts so positively, not just on the flora and fauna it encourages and supports, but also as an ecological tool to help towards emissions targets.

The Club's vote of thanks was given by Rotarian Tony Beenham who thanked George for an interesting and informative talk and presentation on a Reserve which is local. We look forward to learning of future developments following the introduction of the Beavers.
